The Comal County Friends of the Night Sky was formed in March, 2020 by a group of concerned residents who first met using Zoom. We are working on several initiatives to facilitate night sky friendly lighting in order to preserve and improve the stunning night sky of the Texas Hill Country and Comal County, TX and are a 501 (C) 3 not-for-profit organization.

History of Comal County Friends of the Night Sky

In December of 2019, Canyon Lake area residents began posting their concerns on Nextdoor about the vanishing night sky and their inability to see the Milky Way.

On December 10, 2019, a resident posted, “The stars at night are big and bright, deep in the heart of Texas,” resulting in one comment. On January 1, 2020, another resident posted, “The stars at night are big and bright,” resulting in eight comments.  Then, on February 29, 2020, another resident posted, “Light Pollution,” resulting in seventy-five comments.

These individual concerns were soon recognized as a collective concern.  On March 23, the new group of Canyon Lake Friends of the Night Sky held its first meeting via Zoom due to the Covid-19 Pandemic.

In April, the Hill Country Alliance Night Sky team joined as group guides and Blanco County Friends of the Night Sky provided Canyon Lake Friends of the Night Sky with logos, support, and encouragement. On April 24, Canyon Lake Friends of the Night Sky formally became Comal County Friends of the Night Sky (CCFNS).

Comal County Friends of the Night Sky is comprised of people from all walks of life who share a common concern for and enjoyment of dark skies, the Milky Way, constellations, meteor showers, comets, stars, and the moon.

Comal County Friends of the Night Sky is committed to the preservation and restoration of the Comal County night sky through example, education, and cooperation between neighbors, schools, businesses, and communities.

Comal County Friends of the Night Sky will address light pollution in Comal County, “One Light At A Time.”
